Eleven had read some of the book, \t\t\twith eight finishing it, and five had previously read works by McCarthy. \t\t\tWe also had another first time attendee. This book prompted a lot of  \t\t\tdiscussion. An interplanetary adventure with hard science elements, \t\t\tit featured heavy duty physics alongside rescuing the Queen of Sol \t\t\t(not Aretha). Most readers liked the science but quibbled with<!--more--> the idea \t\t\tof fax copies of people, arguing such a process would cause more degradation \t\t\tof the copy. Most readers would have liked stronger characterizations \t\t\twith one person commenting: &#8220;Hard science writers should take lessons \t\t\tin character development from the New Wave.&#8221; We actually would have liked \t\t\teven more of the book. More societal details, more science, more avenues \t\t\tto explore. And a little less triteness: the scene where the villain offers \t\t\tthe hero a chance to join up which the hero gallantly refuses. We voted to \t\t\tdescribe the book as a set of separate novellas, which could have been strung \t\t\ttogether with a lot less repetitive explanation. There was a  \t\t\tbig section of Appendices, which some people enjoyed as much as the book \t\t\tand others skipped altogether. We thought they prevented the book from \t\t\tthe sin of info dump. We enjoyed <em>The Collapsium<\/em> and many people plan \t\t\tto read the sequel as well.
