Seveneves<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0Neal Stephenson<\/h2>\n

The club met on July 18th, 2016, to discuss Seveneves\u00a0<\/em>by Neal Stephenson.\u00a0Nine members attended. Eight had read the author previously, eight had started\u00a0the book and six finished it, three had read the book electronically. The book\u00a0was released in 2015 and is on this year’s Hugo Ballot for Best Novel.<\/p>\n

Every member who had started the book enjoyed the first sentence of\u00a0\u00a0the novel.\u00a0Neal Stephenson is a favorite of many of the reading group members over the\u00a0years and the method of reading his books on an electronic device was often\u00a0easier than carrying around a physical copy of said book due to the size and\u00a0length of other of his novels.<\/p>\n

As we each discussed what we like and did not like about the novel several\u00a0themes became apparent:<\/p>\n

\u2022 A heavier hand was needed by the novel’s editor. There were too many\u00a0details that seemed to drag the novel down.<\/p>\n

\u2022 We all enjoyed the Morse Code used as a communication tool, a very nice\u00a0touch to previous methods of communication.<\/p>\n

\u2022 The Seven Eves was an interesting idea, but many thought twelve would\u00a0have made for a better population mix.<\/p>\n

\u2022 We all had extremely high standard for the author and many of us felt let\u00a0down. The first part of the book was enjoyable, the second and third parts\u00a0of the novel not as much.<\/p>\n

\u2022 We discussed the use of predisposed genetics and spoke at length about\u00a0the need for genetic diversity when recreating new populations.<\/p>\n

All members who had read Stephenson previously agreed they would likely read\u00a0his new works again. His consistent\u00a0high standards for the written word have made\u00a0for previous enjoyable reading.<\/p>\n

Afterwards eight of us went across the street to La Mancha for a Tex-Mex dinner\u00a0and other conversations.<\/p>\n
